Bay Area Tech Layoffs Tracker 2026: Every WARN Filing
A running record of Bay Area tech layoffs in 2026: 1,270 local job cuts confirmed by WARN filings, kept separate from the 25,700 announced company-wide.

Last updated: August 9, 2026. This is a running tracker, updated in place at this URL as new WARN filings and company disclosures land. Figures are not revised silently — each change is dated in the revision log at the foot of the page.
Across nine announcements between January and May 2026, WARN filings and company disclosures put 1,270 Bay Area-specific job cuts on the record: 769 at Amazon, 272 at Meta's Reality Labs, 102 at Meta's other Bay Area sites, and 127 at the City and County of San Francisco. The same employers announced roughly 25,700 reductions company-wide over the same period (Meta's 1,000 in January plus 8,000 in April, Amazon's 16,000 US corporate roles, and Coinbase's 700), of which the Bay Area share is only partially broken out.
That gap is the single most important thing to understand about 2026's layoff coverage. Headline numbers are company-wide; WARN numbers are local; the two are routinely quoted in the same sentence. This page keeps them in separate columns.
Bay Area-specific cuts on the record
Only figures that a filing or a company statement attributes specifically to Bay Area or California operations.
| Date | Employer | Bay Area cuts | Basis | Locations named |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Late Jan 2026 | Meta (Reality Labs) | at least 272 | California WARN notices | Burlingame operations |
| Feb 3, 2026 | Amazon | 769 | WARN notices filed with state regulators | 525 Market St. and 188 Spear St., San Francisco, plus other Bay Area sites |
| Feb 2026 | Meta (other Bay Area sites) | 102 | WARN notices | Bay Area |
| Apr 6, 2026 | City and County of San Francisco | 127 noticed | City confirmation | 18 city departments |
| Total | 1,270 |
Company-wide announcements, same period
These are global or national figures. They are not Bay Area counts, and most have never been broken out by region.
| Date | Employer | Company-wide cuts | Share of workforce | Basis |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jan 13, 2026 | Meta | more than 1,000 | not stated | Company announcement |
| Jan 27, 2026 | under 15% of ~5,200 headcount | under 15% | SEC filing | |
| Feb 3, 2026 | Amazon | ~16,000 US corporate roles | not stated | Company plan, reported alongside the WARN filing |
| Mar 2, 2026 | City and County of San Francisco | 500 positions to be eliminated | not stated | Administration announcement |
| Apr 23, 2026 | Meta | ~8,000 worldwide | ~10% of global workforce | Company announcement |
| May 5, 2026 | Coinbase | ~700 | ~14% of global workforce | Company announcement and SEC filing |
Pinterest is deliberately excluded from the 25,700 company-wide total: the filing states a reduction of under 15% without a headcount, so any figure derived from it is an estimate rather than a disclosure. The company said the restructuring would complete by the end of September 2026, with pre-tax charges of $35 million to $45 million.
What the two columns tell you
The Bay Area is absorbing a small and knowable fraction of a large and mostly unallocated number. Amazon's 769 local cuts sit inside a ~16,000-role national plan; Meta's 374 local cuts across two filings sit inside roughly 9,000 announced worldwide. Where a company has filed WARN notices, the local figure is precise. Where it has not, no local figure exists, and coverage that implies one is inferring.
Two further distinctions worth holding onto:
- Announced is not executed. Coinbase said its cuts would complete by the end of Q2 2026; Pinterest, by the end of September 2026. A cut announced in April may not appear in employment data for two quarters.
- Planned is not noticed. San Francisco announced a plan to eliminate 500 positions on March 2 and had noticed 127 workers by April 6. Officials described the process as phased, with further rounds possible. The 500 is a target; the 127 is a filing.
Sector pattern
Every announcement in this period was framed by the employer as an AI-driven efficiency or restructuring measure rather than a demand shock. Meta's April cut was explicitly tied to an AI efficiency push; Pinterest's January filing described an AI-driven realignment; Coinbase framed its 14% reduction as a move to a leaner, more AI-native organization. That framing is consistent across companies with very different revenue trajectories, which is itself the notable finding: the stated rationale does not vary with business performance.
Method and scope
- Sources. California WARN notices, SEC filings, company announcements, and local reporting of those filings. Each row's basis is named in the table.
- Geography. "Bay Area-specific" means the filing or statement attributes the cuts to Bay Area or California sites. Statewide California figures are included with that noted, because Reality Labs' affected sites are Bay Area operations.
- What is not counted. Company-wide totals, estimates derived from percentages without a stated headcount, contractor reductions, attrition, and hiring freezes.
- Corrections. Send them to the SF Bay Area Times desk. Corrections are applied to this page and dated in the revision log below rather than published as a separate item.
