California Wins 12 New Michelin Key Hotels for 2026

California took 12 of the 65 new Michelin Key hotels named in the United States in the 2026 selection, more than any other state and a third more than second-placed New York. The MICHELIN Guide published the additions on 18 September 2026 as part of a global release that brought the worldwide Key list to 2,832 hotels. Northern California accounts for five of the twelve, and four of those five sit in wine country rather than in a city.

The Northern California five

Solage is the only Northern Californian property to land at Two Keys. Michelin's inspectors describe a set of studios and suites in natural materials with an unusually urban edge for Napa, a globally sourced restaurant menu built on local produce, and a thermal pool circuit drawing on Calistoga's hot springs. It is one of eight hotels nationally to enter the list directly at Two Keys rather than climbing to it.

Rosewood Sand Hill is the only new Key in the Bay Area proper, and its inclusion is a reminder of what the Key measures. Sand Hill Road is a venture capital address, not a resort destination, and the hotel is best known regionally as the place deals get done. Michelin's write-up ignores all of that and describes the Santa Cruz mountains, the pool deck, the spa and the fact that even standard rooms have balconies.

La Bahia in Santa Cruz occupies a 1926 apartment complex and landmark bell tower, Spanish Revival outside and contemporary within, with a Mediterranean spa the Guide rates among the best in town. It is the rare beach-town hotel on the list that is neither a resort nor a boutique conversion of a mansion.

Le Petit Pali St Helena and The Cottages at Little Saint are the small end of the wine country trade. Le Petit Pali has rooms, suites and five cottages, no restaurant, and a breakfast that runs to champagne and local pastries. Little Saint is four cottages reworked by the designer Ken Fulk, named after classic rock songs, with wallpapered ceilings and golden dog statues, a short walk from downtown Healdsburg.

Wine country outperformed the cities

Split California's twelve by region and the pattern is not the one a reader would guess from the state's reputation.

San Francisco itself took none. Neither did Carmel, Mendocino or Lake Tahoe. The three Napa and Sonoma additions, plus the three in Santa Barbara County, mean half of California's new Keys went to wine country, against two for the entire Bay Area and Central Coast and three for greater Los Angeles.

That is consistent with what Michelin says it was looking for nationally. The Guide organised its American announcement around six themes, and the two largest were historic homes and inns and city standouts, but the growth categories were countryside and farm stays, spa and resort destinations, and mountain and nature retreats. Of the 65 new American Keys, 29 fall into those three outdoor and rural groupings.

The national picture

Of the 65 new American entries, 50 arrived at One Key, eight arrived at Two Keys, and seven were existing One-Key hotels promoted to Two. None was promoted to Three Keys, and the United States gained no new Three-Key hotel at all in 2026. The country now holds 359 Key hotels in total, the largest national count in the world, out of a global list of 2,832.

How Michelin grouped the 65 American additions

The Guide sorted its American announcement into six themes, and the split is the clearest statement of what inspectors were rewarding in 2026.

Twenty-nine of the 65 — 45 percent — went to mountain, coastal or countryside properties. Michelin's own framing of the American year was that outdoor immersion was the major trend, and the additions bear that out: geodesic domes and treetop villas outside Austin, reflective glass cabins on the Rogue River in Oregon, a century-old working ranch at the edge of the Great Smoky Mountains, forty-nine hand-built cabins on a lake in the Berkshires.

The category that did not favour Northern California was city standouts. Thirteen new Keys went to urban hotels, and they landed in West Hollywood, Washington, Atlanta, Chicago, New Orleans, Raleigh, New York, Oklahoma City and Houston. San Francisco took none, and the Bay Area's only entry, Rosewood Sand Hill, was classified under spa and resort destinations rather than as a city hotel.

What the Key is, and what it is not

Michelin launched the Key in 2024 as the hotel equivalent of its restaurant Star, and inspectors assess architecture, design, service, character, consistency and value across a selection of more than 9,000 hotels in over 100 countries. It is not a price tier. That is why a four-cottage property in Healdsburg and an 800-room Colorado institution can hold the same distinction, and why the Bay Area's single new entry is a business hotel on Sand Hill Road.

Globally the 2026 list grew 15.3 percent, from 2,457 hotels to 2,832. The top tier grew far more slowly: Three-Key hotels rose from 143 to 155, an 8.4 percent increase, which dropped their share of the Key list from 5.82 percent to 5.47 percent. Michelin is adding hotels at the base and rationing the summit, and California's twelve additions — eleven of them at One Key — are a clean illustration of that.
